Oh those republicans...what a debate..."Keynesian Economics is Dead"

Good evening!

Just finished watching the replay of the Repub debate....and boy are my arms tired.  Har Har!

So...what's an obama-ponzi-care-scheme?  Heard a whole bunch about that.

I loved the emergence of market based economics!!!  Its sad Ron Paul just doesn't come across as strongly as he should in this domain.

Rick Perry Doesn't believe in generally accepted science, neither does Michele Bachman.  Wanna know the difference between those two?  Well, its two-fold

A)Perry knows who Keynes is, and knows that he is dead...fact.  Honestly though, love the acknowledgement that Keynesian economics is dead...

B) Bachman looked like an insane woman, they're both crazy, but she looked it.

This just in...

C)  Chris Matthews just asked Bachman's campaign manager if he wanted her calling foreign policy...I'm pretty sure he was laughing, I know I was.

Newt, Newt, Newt...Why can't I forget the scheister you were.  You came across as the most intelligent, but when will you start forging documents and proclaiming false accusations.  Your best bet is VP

Cain, I don't know what your selling, but you sure sound like a businessman 9-9-9 upside down is...6-6-6....Herman Cain is..mmmm.... SATAN!!!!  Speaking of, why doesn't Dana Carvey run for president.

Loved what Huntsman had to say, but he looks so slimey, and WTF is up with everyone talking about their kids?  BTW Bachman, I don't think using your 1000 kids is good politics.  Which leads me to...

Rick San F'n Torum.  Dude, using your name in the third person has to be the second most annoying thing about the republican party right now.  Following "obamacare" very closely.  Otherwise your a non-issue as always.  I can't pay attention to what you're saying when your always looking so smug, oh and all debate you looked like you needed to #2.  Call your wife from the kitchen after she's done baking and making babies to get you some TP or a fine laxative.  Oh, and you also don't believe in evolution...its 2011...seriously?

Perry and Romney are the obvious front-runners. I realllllly don't like Rick Perry.  More poli-economics in the AM

Obama, please go free-market....please stay socially liberal....beat all of these douches...good day to you sir

Good morning! Its coffee time!

Woooo.  Big PSU win last weekend.  Sure, it was over Indiana State, but a win is a win.  Big test coming up this week against Bama'.  Let us not forget last year and the three red zone interceptions.  I would like to live in legitimacy this year.  Oh, please pick a QB before conference games begin.

I was out with the lady all weekend in D.C.  So that will account for the lack of posts.  Had a doozie last night, just wanted to address the weekend this morning.

Boss is out of town for the week, so its project time for the intern.  Not getting paid never felt so good.  Eh, not really.

Can't say I have any lack of material these days, what with the election and all.  Big voter discontent with President Obama, but is anyone surprised?  I'm certainly not, but not for the reasons most may think.  Sure, I am against big government sponsored programs, deficit spending, the propping up of the economy, the free printing of money, etc.  Still not hitting the nail on the head.  No, what I want to touch on is a facet of politics many are familiar with, but may not be knowledgeable of.  The Gallup Poll. AKA the presidential approval rating.  If you weren't previously aware one question is asked of those polled "Do you approve or dissapprove of the job of the president?"  I mean, how much possibility is there for bias here? hahaha

I did a study last year analysing the effect of the poll on election results, specifically pertaining to the success of the party of the president in office at the time, and what variables go into a successful/unsuccessful approval rating.  Turns out that only a few factors show influence on approval rating, and that the approval rating is very much responsible for the election success of the president and his party.  Two facts pertinent to this blog entry:
1)  President Obama has been polled upwards of 600% more than any president previous.  Average polling number - 45, polling number for Pres. Obama - 350.
2)  Presidential approval ratings have been down across the board since the advent of the 24 hour news channel.  Also the most widely used media source for publishing the approval ratings, analysis, etc.

A conclusion I came to earlier, and one I will infer to here.  If our own lives were subject to a daily job approval rating, and that rating were subject to 24-hour media scrutiny, how would we rack up?  When your job is subject to popular approval, and through that electoral college approval, how is it possible to take the appropriate risks necessary to find our way to success.

Following my man Bastiat, what is unseen?  The best of the best are no longer running for the top office.  (See my post from last night)  We are getting less out of our country because we are getting less out of our leaders.  Only those who want the spotlight are now running for office, and this is bad for everyone.  I dig Ron Paul, but even he is a little out there when it comes to the strict adherence to the gold standard.  Also he is running under the republican ticket, which makes him subject to all the nuances that are necessary to getting elected republican.

Oh well, at least I'll always have Paris...

Speaking of, J-B Say law of the day
Consumption not only provides no stimulus to wealth creation, but is actually contrary to it.
(Ahem, Mr. Bernanke.  Cast your Keynesian aside!)

The constitution is not a vessel for personal mandate...Good Evening!

Hey there!  Hope everyone is having a good evening.

Hey, don't be alarmed, but somehow Michele Bachmann is still running for president.

No, really. Catch your breath and stop laughing. This is starting to get real. The only saving grace is that IF ,and that's a font "largest" IF, she wins the republican nomination the whole of our great nation will get to watch extreme-ism on display. She has to be a worst case scenario for the right, but what do I know...I'm just representative of a majority of the 20-30 somethings with a bit more on my mind that squabbling over a woman's right to her own body...

Which brings me to the subject of my evening inner discussion. Why do conservatives always have to play personal mandate with the constitution. Hell, why do any politicians?!

Straight from the CNN ticker - http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2011/09/05/bachmann-why-is-there-a-department-of-education/?hpt=hp_t1

Mrs. Bachmann - in front of tea party bigwigs - declared that her intentions for the department of education, possibly the only branch of government worth funding, are to sack it whole. Quoting...
"Because the Constitution does not specifically enumerate nor does it give to the federal government the role and duty to superintend over education that historically has been held by the parents and by local communities and by state governments,"
Which, I can get down with. I don't believe taxpayer money should support school districts outside of their locality. In fact I would love to see all of my income tax and property tax go straight to local education. It is not a burden the federal government should have to take on. If a community does not want to take care of its children, then it is the responsibility of the parents of those children to find a better locality. I digress...

She also makes the same points in reference to "obamacare" Again a quote
"see that the current government is acting outside the bounds of the Constitution. Probably the most obvious would be this, Obamacare and the individual mandate that is unconstitutional and is currently contained in Obamacare,"
"And when I'm working with the Congress of the United States, my guiding principle will be that the government works best when it acts within the limitations of the Constitution," she said. "The current president of the United States has failed to demonstrate an understanding."

Ok, haha.

Problem #1
The republicans control the house of representatives, they are part of this mystical government last time I checked. The individual mandate is unconstitutional, again I point I can agree on, but this leads me to..

Problem #2
However, as most tea party newbies seem to forget, not always does the government work best when working within the bounds of the constitution. A for instance, Mrs. Bachmann you would not be allowed to vote if it had worked within its bounds.  Mrs. Bachmann you also want to work within the bounds of the constitution until,
...When asked if she would try and overturn Roe v. Wade, which gives women the right to an abortion, Bachmann said she would put forth a human life amendment and do everything in her power to restrict abortions....

Problem #3
She is willing to amend the constitution to suit her own agenda. Oh how the founders would be proud...
Ma'am, you make me sick...goodnight

And a good morning to you sir

Honestly, I have one of the better office views in Pittsburgh. Especially so with the U.S. flag in perfect view.
Walk around to another office and PNC park is in perfect view, *almost.*  There's not much that would make me want to leave this city except for my lovely lady and the availability of policy research jobs.  Well, I miss a lot of good music here too, oh and the bus line is entirely too expensive, and ...

Haha, the point I want to make this morning is how we deal with where we live.  I was inspired by...

http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/08/30/vermont.town.flooding/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

A VT town surrounded entirely by water due to Irene.  Small town (465 pop.) for sure, these people are taking a very un-katrina like approach to disaster management.  They had a bbq!  This is not to say that there is much to compare with this tiny town, and the devastation Katrina caused to New Orleans, I just respect positive attitudes.  Its been days since assistance has arrived and Kanye West hasn't declared that President Obama hates white people.  Eh, negative people, who gets them?

Speaking of Kanye, this new album by him and Jay is rediculous.  Gonna be on repeat for a week at least.
Big interview today.  Hopefully I won't be asked any open-ended questions.  They will earn their own post sooner or later...

For now I have to get to my linkedin creeping.  Which brings me to my last point...Can I get a recommendation?

Good evening, good night. What you may not know about restaurants...

And if you do know, then I feel sorry for you!

As a ten year vet of the secret kitchen society, I've got some serious bedtime stories.  As this is my bedtime, maybe I'll share a snippet.  No, I'm not talking about the rampant drug-use, sexual proclivity, or open alcoholism, this has some relation to economics, or lackthereof, so at least it's blog relevant.

Has to be one of the most under-appreciated industries out there.  I can't speak for every diner, drive-in, and dive, but I can make assumptions based on inferences from acceptable data.  Mainly, what I've had to see.  Here's the skinny, and I'll generally be referring to retail restaurants, and the kitchen service (can't say I know much about serving, nor do I ever want to)...

What exists is a complete lack of desire for talent.  There is no incentive scheme to keep any proven ability outside of wage rate.  The wage rate for workers is kept low due to over-supply of available bodies, and the general blind-ness of the patrons.  Healthcare packages are a joke, and over-time / holiday pay are extremely limited.  All in the name of cost-centric planning.

What baffles me is the patron desire for service.  Oh if you only knew the wonders that are your regular staff kitchen experts.  I do not speak of everyone I do work with, or have worked with, but we all know of those special few who happen to populate the front/back of "houses." (The "house" is your restaurant, in restaurant speak)

This acceptance of low-quality food at a reasonable price, in addition to the top-brass acceptance of the over-supply of labor, and a general disregard for the quality of that labor creates un-sustainable compensation plans that do not support long-term employment.  Yet long-term employment exists.  Why?  The rational desire for job security.  For those laborers looking for low-risk, low-pay jobs, but special consideration given to low-risk, a kitchen position is a sure bet.  This does not, however, create opportunity for proper financial planning...

And this is where it gets technical.  In the U.S. there is a serious problem with personal saving and wealth management.  U.S. citizens are in over there heads in debt (it's not just the fed gov. kids)

http://www.money-zine.com/Financial-Planning/Debt-Consolidation/Consumer-Debt-Statistics/
"The latest statistics from the Federal Reserve indicate that the total amount of consumer debt outstanding remained fairly steady in 2010. The total amount of consumer debt in the United States stands at nearly $2.4 trillion. Based on the 2010 Census statistics, that works out to be nearly $7,800 in debt for every man, woman and child that lives here in the U.S.  If you're saying to yourself - that that statistic doesn't seem quite so bad - keep this in mind: We're talking about consumer credit, which does not include debt secured by real estate. If you thought that number has debt associated with mortgages, it doesn't."

Yes, that's $2.4 trillion w/o mortgage debt (which is generally seen as a good investment, although as of late not-so-much).  This is a problem when...

http://www.restaurant.org/pressroom/pressrelease/?id=2096
"The restaurant industry employs nearly 10 percent of the U.S. workforce at 12.8 million this year, making it the second largest private sector employer in the United States. Every $1 million spent in restaurants generates an additional 34 jobs in the national economy. In addition, every restaurant job supports almost a full job position elsewhere in the economy; essentially any industry that is associated with the operation of a restaurant enjoys increases in employment when the restaurant industry grows. "

With ten percent of the U.S. workforce receiving sub-standard wages, how is this a good thing ( in-light of the savings debacle mentioned earlier)?

No, I'm not asking for the big-bad-overreaching government to artificially increase wages.  What I am asking for is the dining public to expect more out of their meal.  This is a small checklist to consider...

* Stop expecting fast meals - this is a direct contributor to poor quality food = no demand for high-skill workers = low wages
* If the food is bad, return it always - this helps to push poor workers out the door, or at the very least, to dish...
*  Stop blaming the servers for poor food. - if the server is bad, fine...but the quality of the food is directly related to the kitchen service
*  Stop going to restaurants who continually give you poor food - repeat business does not keep management
vigilant in the policing of poor employees.  Lost revenue will.
*Generally allow the competitive market to thrive by following the above tip - in time better restaurants with higher quality desires will emerge = better pay
*  Fill out comment cards whenever available - just a general way to let the management know who is and isn't a good worker.

That's enough for one night....now someone come check my station out so I can go to bed ;)

Good Morning, Wake Up!

Oh my god....Don't remind me.

Women have the best way of reminding you of the worst things ever.  Not in a horrible event sort of way, but in the grossest way possible, in the morning.  Thanks Pudd!

Song of the morning - Otis - K.West, Jay-z

Craziest album goin now.

Looks like I'll be bottling my first beer tonight.  Pretty exciting, except the pressure backed up on the "Mr.Beer" kit and overflowed.  Can't wait to see how that affected the final product.  Two weeks of bottling should do it.

On a serious note...How insane is Warren Jeffs?
Coma has to be the least that man deserves.

Off to internship, locking down two interviews today!

Kay is chillen, Jay is chillen, what more can I say...?

Hello and Good evening

Gonna really start rolling on a AM/PM post.

By the way, may not have appropriate funding for the hurricane recovery.  Entitlements need funded first.
Can't wait for the political tussle over this.  Should someone get started on an election season 2012 drinking game.  I have a feeling we are all gonna need a shot after this screw-job.

It all starts with a good night ;)
